How often do you come across a Facebook post that asks, “How do I clean the camper… the windshield … the toilet?” That happens for us a lot. That MIGHT be the almighty algorithm at work, because it happens almost every day. Considering our industry, we DO perform a lot of research on cleaning. So, seeing a common question isn’t a surprise.
What IS surprising? The responses! Although we routinely discuss various cleaning products, surfaces and outcomes, there’s one-answer we never use. But we DO see it almost everywhere else. And that is…

Why “Elbow Grease”?
What we find perplexing about “elbow grease” is how often it appears in cleaning advice. As adults, we know that some things simply require more effort than others. However, as cleaning professionals, we also know that cleaning your RV or home isn’t one of them.
Good Cleaning = Good Chemistry
Good cleaners rely on good chemistry. And if the cleaner is good it does the hardest job for you.
When it comes to any cleaner, if you find yourself relying on “elbow grease,” that cleaner isn’t doing its job. Could we REALLY mean that there is no scrubbing required? The answer lies in the chemical composition of the cleaner you’re using.
Chemicals
Yes, we mentioned the controversial term “chemical.” We understand that many in the RV community are focused on living a life as free of pollution as possible. Keep in mind that those items deemed as “chemicals” are not necessarily pollution. Even water is technically a chemical and water alone cannot clean your RV or home to the point that it’s most healthy for you. Understanding the science behind the pH scale explains the acidic side and alkaline side:
Water is neutral.- Neutral cleaners will not clean well enough to meet most peoples’ standards
- Cleaners need to be chosen based on pH so you can match the correct cleaner with the soil being cleaned.
- In order to work effectively, the cleaner needs to be the opposite pH compared to the soil being cleaned.
Neutral cleaners do not clean as well as alkaline or acidic cleaners because they are not attacking a specific type of dirt.
Cleaning the surfaces where you live is your first-best defense against illness. If left in place, dirt that’s not removed will build up and create a breeding ground for germs in time. A “deep” cleaning will need to be done with a pH specific cleaner. Why create the extra work or multiple cleaners? Use a safe cleaner with the correct pH for everyday cleaning and you won’t need to deep clean. They are out there.
Some limitations of Neutral cleaners:
- They cannot remove calcium, lime, or mineral deposits
- They cannot remove kitchen oils, grease or fatty acids
- They cannot remove rust spots
- They don’t remove soap scum, rust and hard water
- They allow dirt build-up to happen and then another cleaning step and cleaner to “deep clean”.

- Not needing to clean multiple times
- Dirt build-up doesn’t happen
- A better clean every time
- Clean once, remove dirt without “elbow grease” for a safe and sanitary home.
